WOMO-United States

Mortality is a basic indicator of health. Understanding its evolution is fundamental for effective public health planning and action. Mortality monitoring is pivotal during influenza or other pandemics, as it provides a robust way to monitor progression and public health impacts when other systems are failing. The tools below are developed by the World Infectious Disease Monitoring Foundation and are part of our key objective to develop an Early Warning System for infectious diseases.

The weekly Z-scores indicate how far mortality diverges from the baseline:

  • Low excesses are between 1 and 4.
  • Moderate to high between 4 and 10.
  • Very high between 10 and 15.
  • Above 15 excess mortality is considered extremely high.

We need your help

Continuously updated and changing data formats make the WOMO program highly challenging. With more resources, more countries will be added in the future.

Data

  • Data source: provisional vital statistics data from the National Center for Vital Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Limitations: it can take two to three weeks for all natural cause deaths to appear within the vital statistics system. The regions marked red have a higher uncertainty.
  • Sharing: images from our tools can be shared when quoting the source, and online by linking to our website below the image.

While you are here

Access to Essential Drugs

One third of children, women and men have no access to essential medicines, putting lives at risk. Hospitals frequently run out of medicines and other essential supplies. Our Med-Aid program connects hospitals with aid and ensures that they receive exactly what they need.

Access to Diagnostics

Much of today’s innovation is either not reaching or not suitable for people in developing countries.

Data to Improve Health

Faster and reactive systems to help provide lifesaving support to vulnerable communities.

Support our work. It only takes a minute but makes a world of difference!

With your help we can bring modern diagnostics and essential medicines to people in need, track disease outbreaks better and help prevent future pandemics.
