Mortality is a basic indicator of health. Understanding its evolution is fundamental for effective public health planning and action. Mortality monitoring is pivotal during influenza or other pandemics, as it provides a robust way to monitor progression and public health impacts when other systems are failing. The tools below are developed by the World Infectious Disease Monitoring Foundation and are part of our key objective to develop an Early Warning System for infectious diseases.
The weekly Z-scores indicate how far mortality diverges from the baseline:
- Low excesses are between 1 and 4.
- Moderate to high between 4 and 10.
- Very high between 10 and 15.
- Above 15 excess mortality is considered extremely high.

Continuously updated and changing data formats make the WOMO program highly challenging. With more resources, more countries will be added in the future.
Data
- Data source: provisional vital statistics data from the National Center for Vital Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Limitations: it can take two to three weeks for all natural cause deaths to appear within the vital statistics system. The regions marked red have a higher uncertainty.
- Sharing: images from our tools can be shared when quoting the source, and online by linking to our website below the image.
