Yersiniosis – Norway

15 cases of Yersinia infections in Norway have been recorded since mid-April from a possible food product. 5 cases are in Trøndelag, 3 cases in Viken and Vestland, 2 cases in Rogaland, and 1 case each in Møre og Emsdal and Vestfold og Telemark.

Yersiniosis is caused by the bacterium Yersinia entercolitica and the symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. Symptoms usually arise 4 to 7 days after exposure and can last from 1 to 3 weeks.

The patients are between 16 and 54 years old and two thirds of the patients are women.

An investigation by the Veterinary Institute and Norwegian Food Safety Authority has been started and have taken samples from food products in the homes of those who are infected.
