August 10, 2021 -( Exact date not specified) – Multiple cases of diarrhea-related illness have been reported this month in Zirakpur’s Baltana area in India. Approximately 170 reported cases of diarrhea with two recorded deaths: a 3 year-old female child and 30-year-old adult male who was a laborer. The cases were widespread in areas such as Ekta Vihar, Ravindra Enclave and Harmilap Nagar. Sixty (60) of those individuals have been admitted to hospitals after being surveyed by the health department team
Symptoms reported by the 30-year-old adult male (who passed) included vomiting and diarrhea. Suspected origin of infection was from a contaminated water source. According to the report, it is suspected that rainwater mixed with sewage water that somehow entered into the drinking water source. The water source from water tubewells have been temporarily shut down and water tanks have been delivered to families as the source of contamination is still under investigation and water samples have been taken for analysis.
