Salmonellosis – Canada
September 21, 2021 – An outbreak of Salmonella reported in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The exact number of individuals infected is not known at this time as the event is still under investigation. As of date, no deaths have been reported.
The suspected origin of the salmonella bacteria is off-market/unlabeled/unidentified pork products sold and used in restaurants specializing in Vietnamese and other Asian cuisines. It is not available in the consumer markets.
The source states that as the bacteria does not have distinct or notable signs of spoilage, individuals can still fall ill from the bacteria. Typical symptoms of a salmonella infection include vomiting, nausea, headache, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Officials in the health and public health departments are currently investigating this outbreak.

Infection with salmonella in developed countries generally results in food poisoning. The organisms enter through the digestive tract and must be ingested in large numbers to cause disease in healthy adults. Between 60% to 80% of salmonella infections cases go un-diagnosed.
Risk factors for salmonella infections include a variety of foods. Meats such as chicken and pork have the possibility to be contaminated. A variety of vegetables and sprouts may also have salmonella. Lastly, a variety of processed foods such as chicken nuggets and pot pies may also contain this bacteria.
Salmonella was first visualized in 1880. The name Salmonella was not used until 1900.
