Cholera – Congo The Democratic Republic Of The

September 7, 2021 – A total of 90 new suspected cases of cholera was reported in South Kivu. There was a total of 8 deaths reported. The demographics of the cases are not described in this source.

Officials state that the epidemic is primarily in the Kitutu health zone. Many of the individuals in that community displayed symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, which is related to a cholera infection. Samples that were analyzed at the lab confirmed the outbreak to be cholera. The lack of sanitary drinking water and unsanitary conditions of the local river are responsible for the outbreak.

The officials of the source state that efforts to communicate with different community members and educate them on the importance safety and well being during a cholera outbreak still continues. There is also the encouragement from health technicians to practice proper hygiene.

Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms may range from none, to mild, to severe. The main risk is severe dehydration, this happens sometimes within hours.

It is spread mostly by unsafe water and unsafe food that has been contaminated with human feces containing the bacteria. Under-cooked seafood is a common source.

Risk factors for the disease include poor sanitation, not enough clean drinking water, and poverty.

Cholera affects an estimated 3–5 million people worldwide and causes 28.800–130.000 deaths a year. Areas with ongoing risk include Africa and South East Asia, where it occurs in outbreaks.

Descriptions of cholera are found as early as the 5th century BC in Sanskrit.
